My #1 Nutrition Tip

"I want to eat better but I don't know where to start."

"I can't control my eating."

"When I'm stressed, I eat too much junk food."

If you've ever had any of those thoughts -- and most of my clients have! -- mindful eating is the first place to start.

What is mindful eating?

It's eating slowly, without distractions. Taking your time to enjoy your food and noticing your body's hunger and fullness cues. It's actively choosing what to eat and when to stop.

It might sound really simple, but it's one of the fundamentals many people overlook. [Review some of the other basics here.]

Often, we're eating at our desks, in our cars, in front of the tv, or while we're scrolling on our phones. When we're not paying attention to what we're eating or how much or how we're feeling, it's ridiculously easy to eat a lot more than we planned and end up feeling uncomfortably stuffed.

Eating mindfully -- even without changing what we're eating -- is a solid first step to better nutrition.

Many people want to jump right in to restricting certain food groups or tracking calories or macros but for most of us, eating mindfully is a much better way to adjust our food intake. It also helps us learn our body's cues that signal when it's time to eat and when we've had enough.

If you want to improve your nutrition but the idea of "dieting" sounds unpleasant, difficult, or overwhelming, mindful eating can make you more aware of portion sizes as well as what you're actually consuming -- and understanding where you are is the first step to determining where you want to go!

If you feel like you can't stop eating once you start or you overeat at certain times, mindful eating will help you become more aware of your fullness cues so you can stop eating before you feel too full.

The diet industry always wants to make you think "being healthy" is way more complicated than it actually is so you'll feel overwhelmed and uninformed and you'll purchase their programs, supplements, and foods.

You truly do not need a special diet, an app, or a cleanse to upgrade your nutrition.

All you have to do is start eating more mindfully. Take your time, pay attention to what you're eating, and stop when you're almost full.

Eating mindfully is one of the basic skills my nutrition coaching clients learn. If you want strategies to help with mindful eating and its counterpart stress eating, or if you need accountability with your food intake, online nutrition coaching is for you!
